Motorists are asked to avoid the M2 after a massive multi-vehicle pile up.

The carriageway is closed leading in both directions between Junction 2 for Rochester and Junction 4 for Gillingham following an accident that was involving at least three vehicles at about 5.20pm. The exact location of the crash is the stretch of the coastbound carriageway that runs parallel to Yelstead Lane and Westfield Sole Road in Lordswood.

Police, Kent Fire and Rescue, the air ambulance service and the Kent Air Ambulance are all on the scene.

A burnt out VW Polo (pictured) can be seen on the carriageway, along with a smashed up BMW and several other danmaged cars.

An eye witness described the scene as “sheer carnage” and said he was badly shaken by what he had seen.

A police spokesman confirmed: “There has been a multiple vehicle road traffic collision on the coastbound carriageways of the M2 and as a result the coastbound carriageways will be closed for a considerable amount of time. Currently the London-bound carriageways are also closed but it is hoped they will reopen soon. Drivers
